Traditional Parent Training

For parents of children 2-12 years old

In traditional parent training, parents are able to learn various skills for dealing with noncompliance, behavioral difficulties, and self-control issues in their children ages 2-12. We teach parents how to generalize skills beyond the specific examples given in the class. Parents will also learn the function of their child's behavior in order to choose the appropriate strategy for shaping that behavior in a more appropriate direction. Certain parenting techniques are better in one situation versus another and parents are given the opportunity to learn how to make these determinations so that the skills learned will make a lasting impact.

Curriculum

Traditional parent training uses a behavioral approach. In our curriculum, you will learn:

  • defining your child's behavior
  • understanding the functions of your child’s behavior
  • using praise effectively
  • active ignoring
  • giving effective commands
  • setting limits
  • scheduling difficult times of day
  • setting up a reward program that works
  • time out
  • setting limits in public
  • setting up a positive behavioral plan with your child's school

Traditional parent training is potentially available in a group or individual session format.
